Love can be a beautiful and complex thing, especially when observed from an outsider’s perspective. This column will explore famous couples who inspire us and teach us valuable lessons from their public relationships.
Let me clarify something: I don’t envy getting engaged at 19, like Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things recently did with her boyfriend Jake Bongiovi. However, this is because when I was 19, my choices for potential partners were limited to whoever was still available at frat parties and didn’t give off any creepy vibes. Nevertheless, I believe in young love, and it seems that Brown and Bongiovi have found it judging by their adorable engagement post on Instagram.
Brown’s image caption, “I’ve adored you for three summers now, baby, I want to cherish them all,” suggests that (1) she is a fan of Taylor Swift and (2) she has been in a romantic relationship with her partner since she was 16 years old, which I find endearing. Although it’s easy to dismiss teenage love as frivolous (I do it often while riding the subway), there’s a certain charm to ending up with your high school sweetheart, particularly if you, like Brown, are a well-known actress who has experienced a lot in her nearly two decades of life.
Last year, Brown revealed to Wired that she had connected with Bongiovi through Instagram. She explained that they were initially friends before their relationship progressed. It seems that the younger generation of Hollywood stars have adopted this approach to meeting each other, as evidenced by Emma Chamberlain and Tucker Pillsbury, who also began by texting before meeting face-to-face. Although no member of young Hollywood has specifically asked for my opinion, I believe that getting to know someone through social media or text is much easier than trying to strike up a conversation in a greenroom or bathroom of a fancy restaurant like Horses in West Hollywood.
One aspect of the Brown-Bongiovi relationship that I find particularly intriguing is the subtle nepotism involved. As we know, Bongiovi is the offspring of the legendary rock legend Jon Bon Jovi, and at 20 years old, he’s only a year older than Brown. Additionally, he appears to be friendly with her acquaintances, as evidenced by a photo of him hanging out with her Stranger Things co-star Noah Schnapp. This is a positive sign, as it indicates that they share similar interests and social circles. As I always say, it’s important to choose a partner who gets along well with your friends and vice versa. Congratulations to the happy couple!
